Navigating Yield Curve Shifts: Duration, Income, and Portfolio Design

Yield curve shifts alter the relative value of short-, intermediate-, and long-duration bonds. An investor positioned for one outcome can underperform quickly when the curve moves differently than expected鈥攅specially when inflation, growth, and policy signals conflict.

Rather than treating duration as a binary 鈥渓ong or short鈥?call, we prefer a process: define the role of fixed income in the portfolio, measure interest-rate sensitivity, evaluate income versus total-return tradeoffs, and stress-test outcomes across multiple rate paths.

Curve positioning can also interact with credit. Wider spreads may offset rate moves in some periods and amplify them in others. That is why we integrate rate and credit views instead of managing them in isolation.

In our view, successful navigation of yield curve shifts comes from preparation鈥攃lear objectives, diversified exposures, and a willingness to rebalance as conditions change.
